Know what to ask before you buy a used car.

A history report tells you what already happened to a car. The Genuine Interest Report tells you what to do next.

Give us the year, make, model, and the miles on the odometer. You get three pages you can print in about a minute, built from the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and the federal recall and complaint records for that exact vehicle.

Build my report

Sheet 1

You keep this one

Your buyer's sheet

The maintenance the factory schedule says should already be done at this mileage, with a line for what proof you were actually shown. Every row starts at "no record". Your job in the driveway is to turn those into a yes, a no, or a number in your offer.

Sheet 2

Hand this to the seller

For the seller

A plain, calm page that says what records you are asking for and asks whether you can take the car to your own mechanic. It carries no complaint quotes and no alarm language. A seller with receipts looks better after reading it.

Sheet 3

Hand this to your mechanic

Pre-purchase inspection sheet

A standard inspection list plus the checks that matter on this year and model, drawn from what owners have actually reported to the federal government. Room to write findings and a cost estimate.

See it first

This is what you get.

Below is a real report, built by the same code your report will use. It is marked SAMPLE because it is for a different car than yours.

What is on the sheets

Four things, for one specific car.

  • A maintenance timeline you can check off

What the manufacturer's schedule calls for by this mileage, grouped the way the work actually happens, with a place to record the receipt you were shown.

  • The complaint window this car is entering

Where this year and model sits against federal complaint data, so an inspection starts with the part owners report most.

  • Open recalls on file

The campaigns recorded for this vehicle, and how to check whether this specific car has had them done.

  • What it will cost next

A price range for the services coming due in the next 12 months or 10,000 miles, at an independent shop and at a dealer.

Straight answer

What this is not.

This is not a mechanical inspection, and it does not replace one. We have no service records for the car in front of you, and we never guess at them. A red row means nobody has shown you proof yet. It is a question to ask, never an accusation.

Complaint data is what owners chose to report to the federal government, so it points at where to look rather than at what is wrong with this car. The report says so on every page.

About your email and your VIN

This is the one place on Wrench.Pro that asks for an email. We use it twice: once to send you the link to your report, and once about five days later to ask how the car turned out. There is no newsletter, and we do not sell it.

A VIN is optional. If you enter one, your browser holds it for this visit so the sheets can show it with the last digits hidden. We keep it out of the page address on purpose, because your browser prints that address at the bottom of every page you hand someone. Closing the tab clears what the browser was holding.

What you submit here is logged to our private spreadsheet, the same one every other form on this site writes to, so a person can follow up. Nothing you enter is shared with a shop.
