The 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis has no open NHTSA recalls. Owners report 8 recurring issue clusters, led by “Driver seat belt buckle unlatching while driving.” Ford closed Mercury in 2011, which is good news for owners: nearly every part is a Ford part. The Grand Marquis is a Crown Victoria, the Sable is a Taurus, the Mountaineer is an Explorer, the Milan is a Fusion, and the Mariner is an Escape. Any competent Ford shop can work on one, and parts pricing follows the Ford volume. Two models break the pattern. The Villager is a rebadged Nissan Quest with a Nissan V6 and a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule. The Mariner Hybrid carries the same high-voltage battery and continuously variable transaxle as the Escape Hybrid, so it needs a shop with hybrid training. Cars from roughly 2007 on use Ford's Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor. Earlier ones run fixed intervals.
No open recalls on file. NHTSA lists no unrepaired safety recalls for this year, make and model. A recall can be issued at any time, and a specific car can still have one open — check yours by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Critical for safety and preventing major damage
On 2007 and later models, follow the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor and change at least once a year. Earlier cars were specified at 5,000 miles under Ford's severe schedule, which covers most real driving. Given the age of these engines, 5,000 miles is the sensible ceiling either way.

Full synthetic costs more than conventional. 5-quart 0W-20 + filter is the typical bill.
Rotate every 5,000 miles, and every oil change on the rear-drive Grand Marquis and Marauder, where the rear tires wear faster. Check sidewall date codes as well, since age retires tires on these cars before tread depth does.

Often free at the shop where you bought the tires — worth asking before paying.
Inspect pads, rotors, hoses, and lines at every service. The Panther platform cars under the Grand Marquis are heavy, and rear rotors and parking brake hardware seize on cars that sit.

Most shops do this free as a courtesy with any service. Don't pay separately if you can avoid it.
Replace every 3 years. Ford did not always publish this as a hard interval, but water in old fluid is the reason aging calipers drag and ABS units fail.

DOT 3 or 4 — match the cap. Vacuum bleeders make this a one-person DIY.
This applies only to the 1993 to 2002 Villager, which uses a Nissan 3.0 or 3.3 V6 with a rubber timing belt due at 105,000 miles. Every other Mercury in this catalog uses a timing chain that is not a scheduled item. If you drive a Villager and cannot document the belt, budget for it now.

On interference engines, a snapped belt destroys valves. Worth doing on schedule. Bundle water pump + tensioner — labor is already there.
Keeps your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently
Drain and fill every 50,000 miles. Fluid type matters here: Mercon V for most of the lineup, Mercon LV on later models, and the Villager takes Nissan-spec fluid. The wrong fluid causes shudder and eventually failure.

Some sealed transmissions have no dipstick — fill is precise and best left to a shop. Many drivers can still DIY drain-and-fill.
100,000 miles on platinum plugs. On the 4.6 V8 in the Grand Marquis, plugs left in aluminum heads for a decade can seize and break on removal. A shop that soaks them and works them out cold is worth the extra labor hour.

Iridium plugs cost more but last 100k+ miles. V6/V8 access varies wildly — some are tough.
Replace every 30,000 miles, or sooner on dusty roads. Straightforward on every model in the lineup.

5-minute job on most cars; the airbox lid usually has clips, no tools needed.
Extends the life of your vehicle and improves comfort
Every 5 years on a car this age. Ford used a gold or yellow long-life coolant on later models and green on earlier ones. Have the shop pressure test at the same time. The plastic intake manifold crossover on some 1996 to 2001 4.6 V8s is a known coolant leak point.

Use the manufacturer-specified coolant — wrong color/chemistry can damage the cooling system.
Applies to the Grand Marquis, Marauder, Mountaineer, and any four-wheel-drive model. Change every 100,000 miles, or every 30,000 if you tow. Limited-slip axles need the friction modifier added.

Test annually. On the Mariner Hybrid this is the 12-volt battery only. The high-voltage pack is a separate system and should be checked by a hybrid-trained shop.

Occupant deaths in fatal crashes (FARS)
263 crashes 1990–2024
How the 263 occupant deaths break down
189
driver deaths
74
passenger deaths
263
occupant deaths
Crash years covered: 1990–2024 This model year first appears in 2000 crashes. Older models have had more years on the road to appear in these crashes, so a higher count here does not by itself mean a vehicle is less safe.
FARS counts every occupant death in a fatal crash, whatever the cause — it does not mean the vehicle was at fault or defective. Counts are not adjusted for how many of each vehicle are on the road. How to read this number
FARS 2024 data is an annual report file. NHTSA revises these records when the final file is published, so this count can change.
Every vehicle has exactly one driver seat, so driver deaths line up fairly when you compare one model to another. Occupant deaths include passengers, so a three row SUV can show a higher number than a two seat car simply because it carries more people.
Both figures are plain counts, not rates. A rate would need to know how many of each vehicle are on the road, and that registration data is not public, so we do not publish rates or scores of any kind.
IIHS publishes driver death rates using this same driver only idea, paired with a registered vehicle years denominator we do not have. Their rates and these counts answer different questions, so do not read either number here as a safety rating.
Owner-reported problem signals
Separate from the federal fatality data above: complaints owners filed with NHTSA about this year and model. These are reports of problems, unverified, and are counted here only as signals.
