The 2004 Suzuki Forenza has no open NHTSA recalls. Owners report 6 recurring issue clusters, led by “Brake lights staying on after pedal release.” Suzuki stopped selling cars in the United States after 2013, though its motorcycle and marine business stayed. For owners the practical effect is that dealer service is gone and parts come through independent suppliers, so knowing what your car actually is saves money. The Samurai, Sidekick, Vitara, Grand Vitara, Swift, Esteem, Aerio, SX4, and Kizashi are Suzuki's own engineering, and their small four-cylinder engines are known for lasting when the oil is kept clean. The Forenza, Reno, and Verona were built by GM in Korea and take Daewoo-lineage parts. The Equator is a Nissan Frontier with a different grille, so Nissan specs apply to it. None of these have an oil life monitor, so the intervals below are fixed.
No open recalls on file. NHTSA lists no unrepaired safety recalls for this year, make and model. A recall can be issued at any time, and a specific car can still have one open — check yours by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Critical for safety and preventing major damage
Suzuki published 3,750 miles under its severe schedule and 7,500 under normal use. Most American driving is severe by the manual's own definition, and these engines are small and work hard, so 3,750 to 5,000 miles is the honest number. Change once a year at minimum.

Full synthetic costs more than conventional. 5-quart 0W-20 + filter is the typical bill.
Rotate every 7,500 miles. On the Samurai, Sidekick, Vitara, and Grand Vitara, check the spare too. These carry it outside on the tailgate, where sun and weather age it faster than the tires on the ground.

Free
Often free at the shop where you bought the tires — worth asking before paying.
Inspect pads, rotors, hoses, and lines at every service. Rear drums on the smaller cars and on the older four-wheel-drive models seize when a vehicle sits, and rusted hard lines are the common failure on anything that saw winter roads.

Most shops do this free as a courtesy with any service. Don't pay separately if you can avoid it.
Replace every 2 years. Suzuki called for this in the manual and it is one of the few intervals here that is genuinely time-based rather than mileage-based.

DOT 3 or 4 — match the cap. Vacuum bleeders make this a one-person DIY.
Keeps your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently
Drain and fill every 45,000 miles. The fluid spec varies more than you would expect across this lineup: Suzuki automatic fluid on the older models, a specific CVT fluid on the Kizashi if it has the continuously variable transmission, GM Dexron on the Forenza, Reno, and Verona, and Nissan Matic fluid on the Equator. Confirm which one before service.

Some sealed transmissions have no dipstick — fill is precise and best left to a shop. Many drivers can still DIY drain-and-fill.
Around 60,000 miles on conventional plugs and up to 100,000 on iridium, depending on the engine. Replace the plug wires or coil boots at the same time on the older engines. Brittle insulation causes misfires that read as a failing coil.

Iridium plugs cost more but last 100k+ miles. V6/V8 access varies wildly — some are tough.
Most Suzuki designed engines in this catalog use a timing chain, which is not a scheduled replacement item. A rubber belt does appear on some of the GM Korea built cars and on certain older engines. Check your specific engine before assuming either way, and if the car has a belt with no documented replacement, treat it as due.

On interference engines, a snapped belt destroys valves. Worth doing on schedule. Bundle water pump + tensioner — labor is already there.
Replace every 30,000 miles, or every 15,000 if you drive dusty or unpaved roads. Small engines are less forgiving of a restricted filter than large ones.

5-minute job on most cars; the airbox lid usually has clips, no tools needed.
Applies to any four-wheel-drive model. Change every 30,000 miles, and immediately after any water crossing. These are real four-wheel-drive systems and the gear oil is cheap next to a transfer case.

Extends the life of your vehicle and improves comfort
Every 3 to 5 years depending on the coolant type your car came with. Later models use a long-life green formula. Ask the shop to inspect the radiator end tanks and the hoses while it is drained, since plastic and rubber this old fail without much warning.

Use the manufacturer-specified coolant — wrong color/chemistry can damage the cooling system.

Occupant deaths in fatal crashes (FARS)
42 crashes 1990–2024
How the 42 occupant deaths break down
33
driver deaths
9
passenger deaths
42
occupant deaths
Crash years covered: 1990–2024 This model year first appears in 2004 crashes. Older models have had more years on the road to appear in these crashes, so a higher count here does not by itself mean a vehicle is less safe.
FARS counts every occupant death in a fatal crash, whatever the cause — it does not mean the vehicle was at fault or defective. Counts are not adjusted for how many of each vehicle are on the road. How to read this number
FARS 2024 data is an annual report file. NHTSA revises these records when the final file is published, so this count can change.
Every vehicle has exactly one driver seat, so driver deaths line up fairly when you compare one model to another. Occupant deaths include passengers, so a three row SUV can show a higher number than a two seat car simply because it carries more people.
Both figures are plain counts, not rates. A rate would need to know how many of each vehicle are on the road, and that registration data is not public, so we do not publish rates or scores of any kind.
IIHS publishes driver death rates using this same driver only idea, paired with a registered vehicle years denominator we do not have. Their rates and these counts answer different questions, so do not read either number here as a safety rating.
Owner-reported problem signals
Separate from the federal fatality data above: complaints owners filed with NHTSA about this year and model. These are reports of problems, unverified, and are counted here only as signals.
