2022 Genesis Gv80 Recalls, Issues & Maintenance

The 2022 Genesis Gv80 carries 4 open NHTSA recalls — most recently covering front and fuel pump. Owners report 7 recurring issue clusters, led by “Fuel pump failure and engine stall while driving.” Genesis publishes a straightforward 8,000-mile / 12-month service interval under normal conditions, with a severe schedule most US commuters honestly fall into — short trips, stop-and-go, or temperature extremes cut the oil interval roughly in half. The 2.5T and 3.5T turbo GDI engines reward strict oil discipline: direct injection plus turbo heat is the recipe for intake-valve carbon, and clean oil is the cheapest defense. New vehicles get 3 years / 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance at the dealer — use it, and keep the records.

Essential maintenance

Critical for safety and preventing major damage

Engine Oil & Filter

Every 8,000 mi

Every 8,000 miles or 12 months under the normal schedule; halve that for mostly short trips or stop-and-go. Full synthetic meeting the manual's spec. Turbo engines (2.5T, 3.3T, 3.5T): don't stretch it — turbo bearings and GDI carbon both punish old oil.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$120–$160

Shop

~$85–$115

DIY

~$25–$55

Full synthetic costs more than conventional. 5-quart 0W-20 + filter is the typical bill.

Tire Rotation

Every 8,000 mi

Rotate with every oil service. AWD (HTRAC) models are sensitive to mismatched tire wear — rotate on schedule and replace in sets.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$85

Shop

~$60

DIY

Free

Often free at the shop where you bought the tires — worth asking before paying.

Brake Inspection

Every 8,000 mi

Inspect pads, rotors, and lines at every service. These are heavy, quick sedans and SUVs — G90 and GV80 eat front pads faster than their calm demeanor suggests.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$85

Shop

~$60

DIY

Free

Most shops do this free as a courtesy with any service. Don't pay separately if you can avoid it.

Important maintenance

Keeps your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently

Engine Air Filter

Every 30,000 mi

Replace around 30,000 miles, inspecting yearly. Turbo engines pull hard through the intake — a dirty filter costs boost response before it costs economy.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$60–$95

Shop

~$45–$70

DIY

~$15–$40

5-minute job on most cars; the airbox lid usually has clips, no tools needed.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

Every 60,000 mi

The in-house 8-speed automatic is not a sealed-for-life unit in real-world driving: fluid service around 60,000 miles under severe use (towing, city traffic, hot climates) keeps shifts crisp. Genesis lists longer intervals for easy highway use.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$330–$500

Shop

~$235–$355

DIY

~$60–$180

Some sealed transmissions have no dipstick — fill is precise and best left to a shop. Many drivers can still DIY drain-and-fill.

Brake Fluid

Every 30,000 mi

Replace roughly every 30,000 miles or 2 years. Moisture in brake fluid is invisible until a hard stop from speed — cheap insurance on a 4,600-lb GV80.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$180–$200

Shop

~$125–$140

DIY

~$10–$25

DOT 3 or 4 — match the cap. Vacuum bleeders make this a one-person DIY.

Spark Plugs

Every 97,500 mi

Iridium plugs rated to about 97,500 miles on most engines. Turbo engines may call for earlier replacement — misfires under boost are the tell.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$285–$390

Shop

~$200–$275

DIY

~$25–$100

Iridium plugs cost more but last 100k+ miles. V6/V8 access varies wildly — some are tough.

Recommended maintenance

Extends the life of your vehicle and improves comfort

Cabin Air Filter

Every 15,000 mi

Replace about every 15,000 miles — sooner in dusty climates. Genesis climate systems move a lot of air; a clogged filter shows up as weak defrost first.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$60–$95

Shop

~$45–$70

DIY

~$15–$40

Usually behind the glovebox. Shops charge labor for a 10-minute job — easy DIY win.

Long-Life Coolant

Every 120,000 mi

First replacement around 120,000 miles / 10 years, then every 30,000 miles / 2 years after. Use Hyundai/Genesis-spec phosphate coolant — universal green is not a substitute.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$285–$330

Shop

~$200–$235

DIY

~$25–$60

Use the manufacturer-specified coolant — wrong color/chemistry can damage the cooling system.

Drive Belt Inspection

Every 60,000 mi

Inspect from 60,000 miles and replace on cracking or glazing rather than mileage alone.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$195–$235

Shop

~$135–$165

DIY

~$20–$50

DIY-friendly if you can reach the tensioner. Inspect for cracks rather than swap on a strict mileage interval.

Battery Test & Service

Every 25,000 mi

Test annually after year 3. Genesis models carry heavy electrical loads at rest (sentry-style features, big infotainment) — AGM replacements only, registered to the car where required.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$225–$390

Shop

~$160–$280

DIY

~$130–$250

Most auto-parts stores test and install batteries free with purchase. Skip the dealer markup.

Fatal crash history & reported problems

Occupant deaths in fatal crashes (FARS)

1 crashes 2010–2024

FARS counts every occupant death in a fatal crash, whatever the cause — it does not mean the vehicle was at fault or defective. Counts are not adjusted for how many of each vehicle are on the road. How to read this number

Owner-reported problem signals

Separate from the federal fatality data above: complaints owners filed with NHTSA about this year and model. These are reports of problems, unverified, and are counted here only as signals.
