2023 Vinfast Vf 8 Recalls, Issues & Maintenance

The 2023 Vinfast Vf 8 carries 1 open NHTSA recall — most recently covering automatic steering. Owners report 3 recurring issue clusters, led by “Forward collision and ADAS sensor malfunction.” VinFast EVs run on a simple rhythm: a service checkpoint every 12 months or roughly 9,000 miles, mostly inspections, with parts replaced on condition rather than fixed mileage. What gives the schedule teeth is the warranty behind it, 10 years or 125,000 miles on the vehicle and 10 years unlimited on the battery, among the longest in the business, and it requires documented adherence to the maintenance schedule in your manual. VinFast has not published a full US mile-by-mile chart publicly, so treat your owner's manual as the authority. One community-documented weak point worth watching: the 12V battery, which owners replace early and often; a failing one causes most of the mystery gremlins.

LANE DEPARTURE: LANE KEEP: AUTOMATIC STEERING

Campaign #25V559000 · Aug 28, 2025

Issue: VinFast Auto, LLC (VinFast) is recalling certain 2023-2025 VF8 vehicles. The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) may activate during wide turns, causing unexpected steering wheel movements that are difficult for the driver to override.

Risk: A steering wheel that moves unexpectedly may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: VinFast will update the ADAS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2025. Owners may contact VinFast customer service at 1-833-503-0600.

Front collision sensors and lane keeping sensor do not work in direct sunlight. For 2 hours in the morning and two hours at dusk. Sensors are behind rear view mirror and they do not work when sun is at eye level.
Owner report, NHTSA ODI #11585394
Forward collision detection doesn't work. Very rarely screen shows a pop up, but never applies automatic brakes. Especially when we were in traffic and if vehicle infrant suddenly stops. ..then it doesn't detect the forward stopped objects and fail to apply breaks
Owner report, NHTSA ODI #11589119
When in heavy fog, rain, direct light to cameras or sensor the safety features become unavailable. As soon as any of the above goes away they come back. This in my opinion becomes more of a risk driving these vehicles if the safety systems do not function properly.

Brake lights inactive during regenerative braking

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

1 NHTSA complaint · 2024-10-05 → 2024-10-05

When regenerative braking is active brake lights do not turn on causing vehicles behind you to come extremely close. The vehicle has extremely strong regenerative breaking. That should activate the brake lights.

Essential maintenance

Critical for safety and preventing major damage

Annual Service Checkpoint

Every 9,000 mi

Every 12 months or roughly 9,000 miles: inspection of brakes, suspension, coolant level, tires, and software. Keep the records; the 10-year warranty depends on them.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$85

Shop

~$60

DIY

Free

Most shops do this free with any paid service. A flashlight and 10 minutes covers the basics yourself.

Tire Rotation

Every 7,500 mi

EV torque and weight wear tires fast; rotate about every 7,500 miles. Warranty excludes rotation as a routine item, so it is on you to keep up.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$85

Shop

~$60

DIY

Free

Often free at the shop where you bought the tires — worth asking before paying.

Brake Fluid

Every 24,000 mi

Replaced on condition per VinFast's schedule with no fixed published US interval; every 2 to 3 years is sound EV practice since regenerative braking leaves fluid aging quietly.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$180–$200

Shop

~$125–$140

DIY

~$10–$25

DOT 3 or 4 — match the cap. Vacuum bleeders make this a one-person DIY.

Brake Inspection

Every 9,000 mi

At every checkpoint. Lightly used friction brakes need checks for sticking and corrosion more than wear.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$85

Shop

~$60

DIY

Free

Most shops do this free as a courtesy with any service. Don't pay separately if you can avoid it.

Important maintenance

Keeps your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently

12V Battery

Every 9,000 mi

Test at every checkpoint and replace early. The owner community documents the 12V as the fleet's chronic weak point, and a tired one mimics much bigger problems.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$225–$390

Shop

~$160–$280

DIY

~$130–$250

Most auto-parts stores test and install batteries free with purchase. Skip the dealer markup.

Recommended maintenance

Extends the life of your vehicle and improves comfort

Cabin Air Filter

Every 15,000 mi

Inspected at checkpoints and replaced on condition; annually is the safe habit in dusty areas.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$60–$95

Shop

~$45–$70

DIY

~$15–$40

Usually behind the glovebox. Shops charge labor for a 10-minute job — easy DIY win.

Battery & Drive Coolant

Every 100,000 mi

Levels checked at every service; no short replacement interval published. Low coolant matters here, since overheating triggers reduced-power mode.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Dealer

~$285–$330

Shop

~$200–$235

DIY

~$25–$60

Use the manufacturer-specified coolant — wrong color/chemistry can damage the cooling system.

High-Voltage Battery Health

Every 18,000 mi

Covered 10 years with unlimited miles. Have health checked at services; no owner maintenance beyond sensible charging habits.

Estimated cost — typical U.S. ranges

Typical U.S. ranges. Actual quotes vary by shop, parts choice, and vehicle condition.

How we estimate: Dealer = OEM parts × 1.4 + labor × $165/hr. Shop = parts + labor × $115/hr. DIY = parts only.
