What you can do

Copy it, share it, change it, build on it, sell what you build, for any purpose. The one condition is credit: a visible link back to the Wrench.Pro page the data came from. The legal text is at creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0. A citation snippet is at the bottom of every data page.

What this license does not cover

  • The NHTSA records themselves. Complaints, recalls, investigations and FARS are published by a US federal agency. Works of the US government are not subject to copyright in the United States. Nothing in our license restricts your use of those records; you can get them from nhtsa.gov without crediting us. Our license covers what we added: the grouping, the labels, the schema, the tables.
  • Complaint text. The quoted excerpts are drivers' own words as filed with NHTSA and published by NHTSA. We treat them as part of the public record. Quote them with their ODI number so anyone can check the source.
  • Manufacturer names and logos. Make and model names appear because that is what the vehicles are called. No logos are in the downloads. Nothing here implies a manufacturer endorses or reviewed this data.
  • Maintenance intervals. An interval ("engine oil, every 7,500 miles or 12 months") is a fact. We publish the facts in our own field names and never the manual's sentences, tables or layout, which belong to the manufacturer.
